[Thread-5] hdfs.DFSClient: Failed to close file /hbase/.tmp/hbase.version

Upon starting services and running the jps command, the HMaster process would appear quickly and then disappear.  The following error appeared in the hbase log:
ERROR [Thread-5] hdfs.DFSClient: Failed to close file /hbase/.tmp/hbase.version

In this circumstance, there was not enough disk space available to the installation.  The process was abending due to not being able to write to the disk.
By running df -h from the command line, a determination can be made as to the free and used disk that is available to the system.
If the system is constrained by disk space, providing additional space, and restarting the hadoop service may resolve this error.
