Reverse DNS Resolution Does Not Work With OpenStack

In an environment configured on OpenStack, there are a few considerations that should be made before deploying Interset software (or Hortonworks in general).

1) Extra entries may be present in /etc/hosts referencing the local server with a .novalocal domain, and a 127.0.1.1 address. These should be removed.

2) OpenStack may add a nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf which will force DNS resolution to go through OpenStack. This should be avoided, as it will likely conflict with intended DNS resolution (e.g. if a host has a hostname of abc.interset.com, the forward lookup may return 10.10.1.123, however a reverse lookup on 10.10.1.123 would likely return abc.novalocal). This will prevent Ambari from properly deploying the HDP stack, and can also cause issues with Interset Reporting.

Note that /etc/resolv.conf will be overwritten at reboot by default, so a more permanent fix should be put in place in terms of how the nameservers are defined.

3) Also due to #2, the machines may have a hostname returned by hostname -f of a value ending in .novalocal as opposed to the intended hostname, further complicating DNS related issues.
